Risiko-Blogger

ZAGREB – U ime troje novinara Vjesnika, odvjetnički ured Zvonimira Hodaka priprema tužbe protiv Vjesnika i njegova glavnog urednika Darka Đuretka. Novine i glavnog urednika tuži dvoje bivših glavnih urednika, Krešimir Fijačko i Andrea Latinović, te bivša zamjenica glavnog urednika Marijana Mikašinović Jambrović.

Njih će troje Vjesnik i Đureteka tužiti zbog šikaniranja na radnom mjestu i mobbinga, a A. Latinović i M. Mikašinović protiv Đuretka će podnijeti još i tužbu zbog seksualnog uznemiravanja.

Ivanka Toma, Jutarnji list, 15.06.2006

Mr Kriletic told me to come to see him on 1st August of this year in 9:00. I answered that I would do that if I could.
On specialist check up on 30 July 2005. on xxx xxx, in xxx xxx, my status of sick leave from 29 July of this year opened in surgery of dr. xxx xxx, and strictly confirmed in diagnosis to cure myself at home with family and that I must keep away from all stress situations. Irregular dismissal – Vjesnik

Saturday, September 10th, 2005
Employment council of Vjesnik Ltd.
Zagreb,28 July 2005
Subject: Declaration about Resolution of Management of Vjesnik Ltd. from 25 July this year to give to journalist Zeljko Peratovic Irregular dismissal of working contract because of heavy violation of working duty
Dear Sir,

I, beneath signed journalist of internal politics editorial office of Vjesnik, Zeljko Peratovic, in this way, want to explain my point of view of circumstances which Management gives as a reason to give me Irregular dismissal of working contract.

The interview with Pavle Gazi, socialistic Minister of police in Socialistic Republic of Croatia (1982./1983.) published in weekly magazine Feral Tribune nr. 1035, under title Djurekovic is killed outside of protocol, I consider as my work of authorship (that’s why it is not under pseudonym). Since 1983. till today Mr Gazi gave only two interviews, both to me. One for Fokus in 2000., and another could be published in Vjesnik, if editorial office wanted that.

I made the interview on my own expense, travelling on non-working day, by friend’s car in Koprivnica, where Mr Gazi lives, taking photos with my own camera, using my own film, and paying for the photographs. At the same time, the interview is written and sent to editorial office of Feral out of working hours in Vjesnik.

By this I want to say that I don’t think that I, by any material means, damaged Vjesnik by publishing Gazi’s interview in magazine Feral Tribune.

I addmit that I have violated the term of working contract, which says that it is allowed to the journalists of Vjesnik to cooperate with other medias exclusively with consent of employer, that is editorial office.

Editor Zoran Vodopija

Considering the importance of theme which Mr Gazi was talking about, and the fact that I have previously talked with him about murder of Stjepan Djurekovic for Vjesnik (enclosure 1.) by previous agreement with chief editor, Andrea Latinovic, editor Zoran Vodopija, editor Nada Dmitrovic and assisstant of director for editorial office, dr. Goran Popovic, and as that arranged conversation for Vjesnik wasn’t done, and I got no explanation from mentioned people, and asked for it from dr. Popovic and editor Dmitrovic, leading the principle of freedom of reporting, and also law regulations which forbid censorship, extended conversation from Vjesnik, made on my expense, I published in Feral Tribune.

The text for Vjesnik was written on 11 July 2005. in 14:54, and chief editor took a look at it in 15:14 and by words of editor Nada Dmitrovic, forbided its publishing without any explanation.
I was ready, in accordance with higher professional standards or new Vjesnik’s general editorial approach, remodel mentioned text, write new, or make for Vjesnik only interview with Pavle Gazi, about I have talked on 12 July 2005 with assisstant of director for editorial office, dr. Goran Popovic.

He promised me that he would talk with chief editor Andrea Latinovic, connected with this problem, and that I would be informed about everything on time.

By the way, I told him about series of problems that I had in communication with at that days chief editor, starting with September 2005, when she accused me publicly that on my text were coming complaints and to the director Franjo Maletic. About these complaints to dr. Popovic you can find out more in one part of my Suggestion to State attorney’s office of Croatia for peaceful settlement of dispute, connected with result of violation of human rights, which I experienced from Counterintelligence agency, and what was officialy recognised byCouncil for internal politics and national security of Croatian Parliament (enclosure 2.).

I informed dr. Popovic that I, because of mobbing which I was exposed to by at that time chief editor Andrea Latinovic, was forced to be two months on sick leave, that was, psychiatric medical treatment, in May and June of this year.
It was medicaly proved, and that can confirm also my doctor, that journalist profession is specific, and that censorship and mobbing, that is, impossibility of writing and publishing, can cause serious mental damages.

So, as at that days chief editor or assisstant of director, and other editors, couldn’t explain what would happen with my text about murder of Stjepan Djurekovic, which exactly today gets great international dimension, I thought that on written approval to that, or expanded text on the same theme, to publish somewhere else, I might wait or till death of Mr Gazi or probably till change of whole editorial management and structure of Vjesnik, or God save, till closing the newspapers, and what I thought was contrary to all journalist principals of in due time and truthful reporting.
Rikard Pompe (left) and Zlatko Herljevic (right) with orphans

Conected with complaint that I in 2002. also got warning about possible Irregular dismissal of working contract from at that time director Rikard Pompe, I ask from Employment council to ask fo opinion about that at that time chief editor Kresimir Fijacko, his deputy Miroslav Lezaja, and executive editor Zlatko Herljevic, who in 2003 propose me in name of Vjesnik’s branch in Croatian journalist association for its award for investigative journalism. Reporters without borders of Austria awarded me with international award for investigative journalism Press Freedom – Signal für Europa 2003, partly thanks to texts published exactly in Vjesnik.

Best regards,

Zeljko Peratovic

Wien, am 17. August 2005

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor Maletic!

Anniversary of Levar’s murder

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

Novi list, 27 August 2005.
Attachement Pogled, page 7
(on croatian at 45 lines)

Dangerous connections

Writes Slobodan Snajder

The knowledge is impotence

Tomorrow will be fifth anniversary of tormented Levar’s murder. Five years! How quickly time flies! It is ten years now since Oluja (Storm), almost fifteen since the beginning of dissolution of former country community, which came out so expensive. And questions and doubts are not decreasing; but on contrary, only increases all the time. Some of the questions appear in regular intervals – for example, when is time for some of anniversaries. It appears as criminals bounded for scene of a crime, which is for them, a place of incomprehensible come-on. Questions as criminals? Questions about criminals as criminals? Should they be silenced, scare them, isolate? That seems so, and now I’m going to demonstrate it once more, to those rears who are interested in subject. In Croatia, who asks, wanders a lot.
And in the end, dark will eat him alive.

Easy on you that Croatian hate

Those rares who are interested in this, can in my book, and related to Levar’s funeral, five years ago, read the following: «Milan Levar is put down in grave, in front of not many people, and more or less, in silence. Over the grave the State kept in silence.

Zeljka Antunovic, Dubravko Novak, Ante Frkovic and Sinisa Jagodic

Civil Croatia also like that, still is in one elegant mourning, because of completely different reason (funeral of tragicaly died actress), choose to watch this funeral from distance. Only police, all kinds of police, bend over the grave abundantly. Police was guarding the deceased as a great treasure, as if he could rise alive. Milan Levar was buried in hate, the last day of August, which didn’t bring any good, anyway. «(Die under stars, page 97. Text is on date 4. September 2000.). It was good to add:

Easy on you that Croatian hate!, as far as he buried in it. On that same place, now in the book, I made a note of footsteps of Djapic’s silent triumph, which was shown like that: Levar had to know what would happen to him! He got what he deserved! So, then, let’s say it from this five-year perspective, everything is all right? Levar got what he deserved. Not everybody get in Croatia what they ask for, far from that. Mark’s square, till recently, was full of those people who were asking for something, and they didn’t get anything. But Djapic’s axiom, from not far 2000.,crystaly clear: Levar and those like him, belong to not very big group of those who must count on that they would get what they ask for.

Anto Djapic

What Milan Levar was looking for?

Nothing for himself. He was onla looking for a good ear for what he has seen, forced or willingly; for what he saw, and he couldn’t live with that peacefully. So, finally, he wasn’t let to live: his unrest is calmed down, he is, according to Ante Djapic, paid, and paid are also, that means, calmed down, those who would be very disturbed because of Levar, if he was alive, from time to time.

Memory of the future

There it goes: five years has passed. The title of the column was: «Who is next?» in queue for peyment and relax. Also is: «We think of Levar’s funeral as a shameful scandal, almost as horrible as the very act of torturing murder, done by a hand of Croatian fascism, we are by the very fact of it candidates for eternity, in which, by the way, we don’t trust very much. I don’t know where is Levar’s soul right now, except in some memory of future of one of completely different country, which, so far, in that future can take only its name».

So let’s ask once more: Where is Levar’s soul right now? In long meantime, since the funeral till today, over our heads have passed ensembles and coalitions, secret services have been on wind and have been evaporated (checked), a hard battle was fought for the truth, for the whole and final truth (for example, about «civil war», events in Gospic’s and other darkened backgrounds), Croatian political Olimp was trembling very much…but the mouse of truth didn’t run out. Five years! It is longer than on our areas lasted World War II. That is whole five-year plan of manipulation, frightening, speechlessness…especialy when we talk about whole and final truth!

Five years, then. To Levar’s son was given a bike which he wanted very much, and to Levar’s widow something like humble rent – it all reminds me of wondering settlement with descendants of Zec family, whose members were killed in one of earlier «success» of Croatian fascism (as the squadrons of death exactly were named in column in 2000.).
Bike+rent=BLOOD-MONEY. Maybe it wouldn’t be bad , because of transparency of the trade like this that state makes price list of arrangements as this one with help of one highly ranked Parliamentary commission, and President would be Anto Djapic, if possible, the politician from 2000. (Although his recent statements in Glavas case are pretty the same.) Indeed, Levar’s son could himself one day ask something, even very unpleasant; for example, how come that his father appeared in bike.

Peratovic in Don Quixoteic situation

By mentioned blood-money, the state, which on the day of Levar’s funeral choose some other ceremony from offer, admited its part of guilt, huge and crucial, because it didn’t protect the man, who knew too much, who started to talk about things he knew, which was extremely obnoxious development for Croatia. One of those who with his initiative, and in spirit so called, investigative journalism, collected some knowledgements about torturing liquidation of Milan Levar is many times awarded journalist Zeljko Peratovic.

In journalist profession he is certanly in line of those the most competent for the things known about Levar, and not suppose to be known. He knows, for instance, that liquidation was announced and who announced it. Many times in that connection he suggested to the authorised ones to start investigative activities, and he pleased (literaly), to listen to him and to someone who holds this or that lever in hand in «intelligence community», say what he knows. But his knowledge was not wellcome. Peratovic is for years in rather Don Quixoteic situation, only windmills he is fighting against, are not some ghosts, but people on positions, who protect their positions, and in that way discourage the truth. The truth about Levar’s liquidation – which is obviously the fruit of cooperation highly ranked powerful people and banal slaughtermen and murderes – seems that nobody needs it. Indeed, it is so dangerous, that is, as some state secret (not to say: shame), guarded in crypt of state interests and reasons. In such situation the knowledge is in fact impotence. Even more than that: it is dangerous.

Milan Levar and Zeljko Peratovic near Graz, Austria,1999

Peratovic has the chance to check this fact by expensive method of personal skin: he was given a fast dismissal in «Vjesnik», that state guardian of state interests and truths, with explanations which don’t make sense. He published in Feral an interview for which his recent editorial office didn’t show any interest! That could be a motive (conflict of interests), but the real reason is that Peratovic insisted on facts, names, dangerous connections, which he, by personal investigative activities, came up to, especialy about Gospic and similar darknesses. In his dismissal is denied as a good journalist. The worl doesn’t think so. In an angry official letter of association «Reporters without borders of Austria», remind the director of «Vjesnik» (Franjo Maletic) that Peratovic, exactly during his investigation, awarded with prominent international awards, among others, also form mentioned association (he got Press Freedom Award 2003.). As in similar cases, only chance for the truth, in this case also Peratovic’s, that his newly case internationalise.

The state newspapers will throw out of its lines a person who is unpleasant for the state; there is nothing new about that, but it has to be known about what kind of state, what truth is all about. In some way (better: in every way), five years after murder and funeral, is perpetuated the scandal of absence, not-doing, deafness of the state for the truth.

Aus Laudatio auf Zeljko Peratovic

Norbert Mappes-Niediek

Norbert Mappes-Niediek im Festsaal des Palais Schwarzenberg/foto Monika Morawetz für ROG

Liebe Festgaste!

Željko Peratović (Zeljko Peratovic), one of few Croatian
journalists who also happens to be regular blogger, just got fired from Vjesnik
because he breeched contract by publishing an interview for Feral Tribune.
Peratović claims that there was political background for that decision.

Topic: I got fired from my daily Vjesnik, Zagreb, Croatia

und aus 45 lines:Why I will be fired from Vjesnik

When Zeljko Peratovic came back from his holiday at the beginning of September 2004., main editor of «Vjesnik», Andrea Latinovic, told him publicly in editorial office that his writing was getting rebuking, and that similar complaints was getting director of «Vjesnik», Franjo Maletic. She said that Tomislav Karamarko called her, at that time joint owner of security firm Soboli Ltd., and he announced law sue against «Vjesnik», because Peratovic wrote in one text in that newspaper about possibility that Karamarko became chief of all secret services. He also wrote that Karamarko was on holidays in his summerhouse on Mljet that summer. The main editor of «Vjesnik» said to Peratovic that Karamarko didn’t have summerhouse on Mljet and that was untruth, the same thing was if she wrote that Peratovic was murder. She also added that agains Peratovic protested Mate Basic from Australia. She warned that she decided to go for a lunch with Tomislav Karamarko, to try to prevent Karamarko from filing charges against «Vjesnik». After few days, Andrea Latinovic informed Peratovic publicly in editorial office that she went for a lunch with Tomislav Karamarko and they talked for five hours about Peratovic and that Karamarko said a lot of things about Peratovic. Tomislav Karamarko is professional policeman and intelligence agent (he was chief of Zagreb’s police, superintendent of UNS (Office for National Security), and now he is chief of POA). Peratovic met him only once in 1998. in restaurant owned by Zvonimir Trusic, on Remetinec. Because of those facts, Peratovic categoricaly claims that Tomislav Karamarko was talking to Andrea Latinovic about his professional cognitions about the journalist, what he shouldn’t do, regardless of accuracy of the informations, because that was prohibited to him by Law of protection of informations and Law of security services. That had disagreeably consequences for Peratovic.

VI

Editorial office of «Vjesnik» more rarely published texts of Zeljko Peratovic, even under censorship were those texts which was ordered by editorship. The explanation why his texts were not published he didn’t get, except once editor of internal politics, Marijana Matkovic for text about Damir Jukica, one of onetime highly positioned functionaries of POA, who in interview for weekly magazine «Nacional» (attachement 3.1) confirmed presenting of Presentation of chief of POA, Franjo Turek, to the top of the state about hostile activity of journalists, said that text wasn’t published because it was based on compilation of somebody else’s texts and it was full of incorrectnesses. That explanation she filled up with remarks that in his texts could never be seen the source. That was repeted to Peratovic on meeting in January 2005. with main editor Andrea Latinovic, her deputy, Marijana Matkovic and assistant of main editor, Zoran Vodopija.

VII Considering that identical evaluation about writing of this journalist is in Information of former chief of POA since 16.10.2004. (attachement 3), Peratovic claims that editorship of «Vjesnik» was illegaly informed with opinion of POA about his way of working. That statement is supported by evaluation that till the end of 2004. Peratovic extremely professionaly cooperated with Zoran Vodopija, Marijana Mikasinovic and Marijana Matkovic, and that they have never put against him the way of his writing and his themes, on the contrary, they gave him their support…

XXII

Peratovic Zeljko, because of pressures and heckling comments on political meetings, on street, in trams, that he is betrayer of Gotovina and British spy, experienced psychical shocks, discomfort, harassing, threats, humiliation. On his work he is exposed to censorship, isolation from editorial office and management of «Vjesnik», that is mobbing. Because all that he got sick and had to go on sick leave and ask for medical help. (attachament 16)…

XXIII

The consequences for Peratovic Zeljko are disastrous on economic, professional and moral base, but also medical. That kind of acting of POA, by the proposer, is stressful condition and inhibits it in original analysis and critical approaches of considered problems which are hapening in society. He has the feeling of constant threat and editorial aversion from confiding journalist investigation work , what is for individual journalist, for profession, and also for public, fatal. That has a great influence on his professional behaviour. In question are the freedom and professional work of journalist. No matter the Committee for internal politics and national safety brought mentioned conclusion, journalist rights of Zeljko Peratovic are still violated, because in newspapers he is working for, «Vjesnik», and which are formaly owned by the Government of Croatia, is not allowed writing about themes he wrote before: intelligence services, organized crime and war crimes. Almost any writing is prohibited…

Jänner in Wien.

How I was fired from Fokus

Monday, July 18th, 2005

Croatian President Stjepan Mesic flanked by HRT Director General Mirko Galic and EBU Secretary General Jean Stock

After being forced to leave the Globus, a weeklymagazine -to the censorship of the chief editor Mirko Galic (the end of 1999), I got position with the Fokus, yet another weekly magazine, whose editor in chief was Mladen Maloca who was theeditor in chief of the most appreciated Yugoslav weekly magazine- Danas – printed and edited in Zagreb anddistributed from Zagreb.

But the Fokus owner is Marinko Mikulic, one of deputy presidents of the Association of Catholic Employer sand member of the HIP (Croatian Identity and Prosperity) Party – a right wing political party, which leader is the son of late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman, (Miroslav) and the head of the Croatian Information Service – one of the secret HDZ political polices.

The editor in chief Mladen Maloca and his deputy Vanja Sutlic, guaranteed me freedom of writing and they keptit working until I published the last interview with Milan Levar. After that the magazine owner Mikulic changed theprofile andconcept of this weekly magazine and it was notliberally oriented news magazine – rather a catholic right wing orientednews magazine full of speech hate against the Croatian president Mesic, the Hague Tribunal, the Racan government.

Because ofexistential reasons I was forced to work for the sameweekly for over some time. When my one year contractwith this weeklyexpired, the directorship of the same weekly signedwith me a new contract although I told them – if mywriting not of anyinterest to them, I could leave the weekly without anycompensation. But that time deputy of the editor inchief Vanja Sutlic told me the directorship needed me and they wanted meto sign the new contract. Having in mind that they didnot allow meto write, I asked Vanja Sutlic and the directorshipwhat to do and they told me to leave the news weekly.

Due to the factthat they owed me a of money, I did not agree to. After that, in the name of directorship, Vanja Sutlic fired me and that wayI did not have any rights except the unemploymenthealth care. Until 2004 Vanja Sutlic was the deputy of the HTV CEO Mirko Galic and the PAN Papir witness before the court inthe case against the newspaper Fokus. Mladen Maloca wasaconsultant of the government owned Tisak company – thelargest distributer of newspapers in Croatia. Mladen Maloca will appear before the court in the role of witness -on behalf of his former employer Marinko Mikulic.

Mikulic’s close friend accused and jailed General Norac andmade several times public statement accusing me and myfriend Levar for imprisonment (Rijeka prison) of his friend Mirko Norac. On my behalf the Croatian Journalists Labour Union whose attorney is Orhideja Martinovic sues the PAN Papir Company. Up to now, a number of my colleagues testified before court.

Slobodna Dalmacija, Friday,February 15, 2002.

In the case of the Vjesnik journalist against the Fokus news weekly testified Drago Pilsel too in the Fokus possession “remained” 80 thousands kunas

ZAGREB – By the free lance journalist and the Forum 21 president Drago Pilsel testimony at the County Court the investigation was continued in the case where today’s Vjesnik journalist Zeljko Peratovic sues the new weekly Fokus owner- the PAN Company – for 80 thousands kunas of theunpaid salary. Reportedly, Peratovic claims that he was fired due tothe censorship carried by Vanja Sutlic, now employedby the HTV as deputy of the editor in chief of the Informative Program. Karlos Zvonimir Pilsel, better known by Drago name, was a free lance journalist working for the Fokus weekly, andaccording to him, one of the founders and editors ofthe same news weekly starting with the news weeklyfirst issuein January 2000 until September of the same year.

- Peratovic was coming to work each day, he finishedall his tasks alone, and sometimes we worked togetheron thesame tasks. The salary was paid put in envelope, ofblue or white colour, and it happened that I havegotten foodstamps that can be spent only in the discount shop ofthe Fokus owner – the PAN Company. The monthlysalaries werenever on time and regularly paid and only a smallerpart of the salary was deposited at the checkingaccount. By thecontract my salary was 7 000 kunas, and according tothe Peratovic’s contract – his salary was 10 000 kunas- explained the salary payments circumstances that timedeputy president of the HND.

His employment, as he stated, was also terminated dueto the censorship – for he protested against thepressure madeby the Djakovo bishop. During of the month of August, 2000 the profile and concept of the news weekly wasbeingchanged, claimed the witness, and the new men came whomade him and Peratovic not possible to normally work.

- I want to stress that there was an institutionalcensorship in the Fokus and journalist Peratovic was systematically ignored – concluded Pilsel.

Bishop Marin Srakic

Drago Pilsel, former contributor to Fokus:

Maloca Washed His Hands

Bishop Marin Srakic openly criticized Mikulic because of Fokus’ editorial policy, and he in turn pressured Maloca to get rid of me. I found out that Mikulic was upset because I on one occasion reprinted an article by late Fr. Luka Vincetic, who used to write for Feral, the paper Mikulic abhors.

As I live from the money I earn as a journalist, I accepted the idea of starting a new news magazine that would among other include religious content, so that in February 2000 I joined Fokus as an editor of the religion section of the magazine. I had an agreement with the editor-in-chief Mladen Maloca and his deputy Vanja Sutlic that I was supposed to be a member of the editorial board and in my section be tolerant of other religious communities, instead of focusing only on the dominant, Catholic community. I published articles by numerous authors that are otherwise not admired by the Catholic bishops. However, I believed that they were interesting and also true believers.

My open editorial style and my writing was disliked by the owner, Marinko Mikulic. I also found out that Mikulic was sort of a protégé of some bishops, and especially of Djakovo-Srijem bishop Marin Srakic.

On one occasion bishop Srakic attacked the idea of introduction of the subject religious culture into public schools, claiming that children from mixed marriages, those who are neither Serbs nor Croats but something in between, those who do not know either their nationality or religion, were advocating the introduction of such a subject. We were shocked by such an abuse of ethnicity and religion and published the bishop’s statement with a short commentary in the article entitled Religious Instruction for Yugo-nostalgics.

That was allegedly the fuse, as bishop Srakic openly criticized Mikulic because of the material published in Fokus (I have been told that he was not the only one), and he in turn exerted pressure on Maloca to get rid of me. I later found out that Mikulic was especially upset that I had on one occasion reprinted an article by late Fr. Luka Vincetic, who used to write for Feral, the paper Mikulic abhors.

All in all, I soon realized that I was wasting my time in Fokus, but I stayed for a few more months trying to recover some of the unpaid wage arrears. Therefore, I was fired in September 2000, after the owner’s and bishop’s pressure on the editorial board with the following explanation: Screw it Drago, that’s how it is!

Soon afterwards Mikulic paid the wages he owed me, but he refused to pay several thousand kunas of traveling expenses I made with Sutlic’s and Maloca’s approval. As far as that is concerned, Maloca very elegantly washed his hands.
